Recently we had the chance to catch up with Nathan Sheppard, Welding Technology graduate and current employee at Steris Corporation.
Where have you worked since you graduated, and where do you work currently, and how long have you been working there?
I left school and went straight into a job at Steris Corporation as a welder. Haven’t looked anywhere else since, and really have no desire to, so far I love it.
What types of things do you do there day to day?
I weld stainless steel components that are part of larger assemblies which clean and sterilize medical equipment.
What do you like about your career?
What’s not to like? I get to weld all day, the company is great, it’s an all around great environment.
What are your career goals for the future?
Eventually I’d like to finish my engineering degree and potentially go that route. I have no doubts that what I learned at EIT will help me in some way with that. Until then though, you can find me in the weld booth.
What advice can you give current students and new graduates that can help them be successful?
Don’t quit. Stick with it, it’s worth it in the future. Show up for class, that’s helpful. And don’t get discouraged if things don’t go exactly according to plan. Be flexible, don’t go into anything with set terms and an unwillingness to negotiate.
What did you like about attending Erie Institute of Technology?
The knowledge that the instructors had was astounding to me. Their experience and willingness to assist me with class projects and questions was a huge plus. Job placement was great and helpful, the faculty overall really made the difference for me.
What do you like to do in your free time / any new happenings in your life you want to share?
I’m working on moving out closer to work (it’s an hour and fifteen minute drive right now). Currently, my favorite pastime is sleeping due to the aforementioned lol. Beyond that, I like visiting friends, watching movies, and assorted outdoor activities.
