Welding Technology
Overview

Welding is the most common way of permanently joining metal parts. Because of its strength, welding is used in thousands of manufacturing activities, construction, and pipelines. There are over 80 different welding processes that can be employed. Some common types of welding are arc, TIG, and MIG. Arc, plasma, and oxy-gas cutters are also used for cutting and dismantling.
Skilled workers generally plan work from drawing and use their knowledge to determine how best to join the parts. Highly skilled wolders may be trained to work with a wide variety of materials, such as titanium, aluminum, or plastics, in addition to steel.
Some welding positions require general certifications in welding or certifications in specific skills. You will prepare to take the A.S.M.E. Section IX Critical Piping certification exam and the D1.1 Structural Steel Welding certification exam from the American Welding Society.
